Style Icon: Apple Celebrates 10th Anniversary Of Iphone With Launch Of The Iphone X
At Roderer our mission is to create a collection of leather goods of exceptional quality that appeal to the modern gentleman. That said, we’re not interested in fads or trends or what’s ‘hot right now’. We make products that last and so it’s critical they still look stylish in 5, 10 or even 20 years’ time. That’s why we look to timeless style icons from the past to give us inspiration for the present and the future. The Apple iPhone is one such example.
It may be hard to believe but Apple’s revolutionary touchscreen iPhone is already celebrating its 10th birthday this year. Introduced to the world by Steve Job’s in 2007, he famously described Apple’s new device as a three-in-one product: “a widescreen iPod with touch controls, a revolutionary mobile phone and a breakthrough internet communications device.” The concept was almost unfathomable at the time and certainly took some time to gain momentum. And yet, just a single decade later, the iPhone has completely altered every single aspect of our lives.
THE IPHONE X
This past September, the latest iterations, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, were introduced to the world, as well as a celebratory 10th anniversary phone, which Apple CEO Tim Cook presented separately, named the iPhone X. The newly designed phones have glass on the front and the back, and represent Apple’s most robust iPhone yet. Whilst the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus will be popular with the masses, it’s the sleek and stylish iPhone X that really caught our attention.
As the first iPhone without a home button, it marks a new chapter in the product’s 10-year history and somehow further streamlines what is already one of the world’s most streamlined designs. If you need to reach Apple’s virtual assistant, Siri, on the X, you simply say "Hey Siri" or press the larger side button. It’s still super easy to unlock the phone however, you don’t even have to use your hands if you don’t want to. Integrated facial recognition technology means you can simply look at your iPhone X to open it. This feature also works with Apple Pay, although admittedly some may find it a little creepy to have their phone constantly taking photos of their face.
The iPhone X is also the first iPhone to feature a more power-efficient OLED display, which is thinner than the LCD displays Apple previously used and produces more vibrant colors. Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, was quoted as saying this is the first OLED screen that was good enough to be in an iPhone, so you know it’s got to be something special.
The other big iPhone update to be debuted in the Apple X is wireless charging. You can of course still use your traditional plug-in charger (boring!) or you can invest in a charging pad or mat. Using the latter option, you simply place your iPhone X on the mat and voila, it starts charging all by itself. As an added bonus, Apple recently joined the Wireless Power Consortium, which works with member tech companies to uphold the Qi wireless charging standard. This means wireless charging on the iPhone X will work with existing Qi charging mats, which are already in some cars and popular places, including McDonald's.
Admittedly, many of these new features have already been seen on other smartphones, particularly from Samsung and LG. However, Apple has a way of taking the user experience and crafting it into something special, making it more intuitive and therefore more enjoyable. Plus, there is simply no comparison when it comes to aesthetic appeal. The iPhone X looks and feels like a luxury product, which is why it will be perfectly at home in your new Roderer Business Bag.
